Sinopse

O objetivo deste livro é fornecer uma panorâmica sobre as relações entre o Papado e várias áreas da Cristandade ao longo do século XII. Contrariamente à abordagem historiográfica tradicional, o Papado é aqui analisado não como uma instituição todo-poderosa, mas como um poder «emergente». Tal como os poderes que se dirigiam à Sede Apostólica, também o Papado procurava legitimação, num processo dinâmico de interação com as instituições do seu tempo, marcado por avanços, recuos, mudanças e negociações contínuas. As influências recíprocas resultantes deste processo contribuíram, por um lado, para a difusão e afirmação do Primado Romano e, por outro, para as tentativas de construção ou consolidação de novos reinos e entidades políticas no mundo do século XII.
